Gateway
A standing ring 13 blocks across. Anything that passes through its event horizon comes out of another ring with the same address.
The opening is 9 blocks wide, so a
Sea Scout fits through with about three blocks to spare on every side.
The bottom of the ring is two blocks thick, so the opening starts two blocks above the ground the ring stands on. Underwater you can swim or steer straight in. On land, build a step or a ramp up to it.
Wild Gateways
Gateways stand on the ocean floor on small prismarine platforms. Each one is half of a pair with its own address, and needs no power.
The first time anything goes through a wild Gateway, the far half of its pair is built in another ocean about 1,500 blocks away, and you arrive there. From then on the two rings are a fixed route. Nothing has to be explored or loaded beforehand.
Wild Gateways from before this change, which all started on Cyan, take their own pair address when their ring builds.
You can retune a wild Gateway like any other. Give it the address of a ring you built and it links there instead of to its far half. Give it an address no other ring has and its next trip builds a new far half for that address.
Crafting and moving a Gateway
A crafted Gateway comes packed, with its whole ring inside it. Place it and the full ring builds at once, standing across the direction you are facing, with its front towards you.
Sneak and right-click any part of a formed ring with a wrench (the
Aquarine Steel Wrench or any other mod's wrench) to pack it up again. You get one packed Gateway back, keeping its address, so you can carry a wild Gateway home and keep its route.
The ring stands on the Gateway block and needs a space 13 blocks wide and 13 blocks tall. It builds into air, water, kelp, seagrass, coral and other blocks you could place over. If something solid is in the way, it waits as a bare Gateway and tells you where. Wear a
Prism Monocle and look at the Gateway to see every block in the way highlighted in red. Clear it and the ring finishes itself within a few seconds, or right-click the Gateway with a wrench to try again straight away.
A formed ring cannot be mined for anything. Breaking a part takes as long as breaking obsidian by hand, drops nothing, and turns the rest of the ring back into plain
Gateway Ring Segment. Use a wrench instead.
To repair a broken ring, put segments back in the circle below and right-click the Gateway with a wrench.
Power
A wild Gateway that has never been moved needs no power. Any Gateway that was crafted or moved needs AP: point a laser at the Gateway block at the bottom of the ring (see Laser Power). It holds 5,000 AP and uses 100 AP every tick while it is open. It opens once it has 2,000 AP stored and stays open until the buffer runs dry, so a laser supplying at least 100 AP/t keeps it open for as long as someone is near. With a weaker laser it opens for a few seconds at a time, then shuts while it charges back up to 2,000.
Opening
A ring with a match opens when a player or a submarine comes within about 12 blocks, so you can steer straight in. It dials first: the glyph track spins, the address chevrons light up in their colours, and the event horizon bursts open. It closes again a few seconds after everyone has gone.
A redstone signal into the Gateway block holds the ring shut.
Addresses
Four of the nine chevrons hold the address: upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right, as seen from the front. Each can be one of eight colours, giving 4,096 addresses:
White, Light Blue, Cyan, Blue, Purple, Magenta, Lime and Black.
Changing the address is free. There are two ways to do it:
- Right-click the ring near an address chevron while holding one of those dyes. The nearest chevron takes that colour, and the dye is not used up.
- Right-click the ring with an empty hand to open the address screen. Rows 1 to 4 are the upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right chevrons. Pick a colour for each and press Set.
Look at any part of the ring through a
Prism Monocle to read its address, whether it is open, and its stored power.
Travelling
Pass through the horizon from either side and you come out of the matching ring's front, still moving at the same speed and at the same spot across the opening, facing away from it. Anything you are riding goes with you, along with anyone else riding it, so a submarine arrives with its crew on board. Mobs and dropped items travel too.
- If the front of the far ring is blocked, you come out of its back instead. If both sides are blocked, nothing happens and you pass through as if the ring were closed.
- After a trip, nothing can go through a Gateway again for 5 seconds (
gatewayCooldowninconfig/nautec-common.toml, 100 ticks), so you do not bounce straight back. - The far ring can be in an unloaded chunk. The Gateway loads it when you travel.
- You always arrive at the nearest matching ring. If several rings share one address, give each pair its own address so you arrive where you meant to.
A ring with no match stays dark and lets everything pass straight through.
